General Care Discussion :: terrible turtle tank conditions in school.

ok in school there were four turtles in a 30 gallon tank. it was horrible no filter no basking area and tons i mean TONS of smal rocks.
well over easter vacation i took them home with me and well i started finding little rocks in the tank that were from school. and im like wat the heak wats goin on here then i thought maybe they were eating the rocks. o fecies i thought to my self how am i goin to get the teacher to let me change it. well of course i was the only one that knew wat to do for them so i started this year after i found out no one was cleaning the filter i left behind for them. u should have seen how much stuff that was stuck in the the rocks it was awfull well im still working on the tank so theres really nothing elso to say. later on ill post some pictures of rocky and rachel the turtles that r now there. its awfull to see wat they do to turtles. and i have a question is it normal to see the vains of a turtle on it plastron? didnt think so.

Perhaps you should direct your teacher to this or another reputable turtle site for some basic care information?

Wow, it seems like a teacher would research how to care for an animal that is in their classroom. BUT, kudos to you for being on the ball and doing what is right! I agree with Steve. Maybe you can print some info on RES care from this site for your teacher. Maybe it can be a class project to improve the turtles' environment. Then the teacher can turn it into a lesson on biology or environment. I'm sure there's a million lessons in there!

Sorry, don't know about the veins thing. I'm not sure that's normal either. Can you get a pic?

It's especially bad that there's a substandard turtle tank at a school because it will teach everyone who sees it that it's ok to treat turtles that way. Sillyleisl and Steve have very good suggestions. I hope you are able to improve the living conditions for those poor creatures. They won't last long like it is. I really admire you for taking the initiative to try to clean things up.

On the veins on the plastron - do you mean the lines that separate the plates (scutes) of the shell? Can you post a picture or provide a little more description?

I'd tell the teacher about this site and explain that she is very poorly caring for the turtles. They should be setting a much better example than that!

Definitely tell the teacher about this site so they can read up on what they need to do in order to keep turtles healthy! And maybe you can volunteer to help out when the turtles need their water changed!

Well first, you should tell your teacher about the dangers of having gravel. Then offer to take it out. Then that problem is fixed. For the rest of it, direct your teacher to this site so she can learn how to care for the little guys. And if you have any spare stuff from your tank (I know we have tons) you could consider donating it to your teacher.

its not the lines that separate is in the the middle area.
