General Care Discussion :: Abnormal pooping?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I just fed the babies 3 hours ago and there is already 4 poops in their tank. I don't see any poop from Nyx until the next day and usually it is just one poop. Sorry if I am grossing anyone out but I want to know if their digestive system is digesting the food too fast. I don't know how different the adults are from the babies but I just find it odd that there is so much poop from the babies and so little from the adult.

Well I almost never see Roca's poop ( He eats them)

But maybe your adult is eating it too? and maybe because the babies are so small thats why they pass their food through their digestive systems faster,

My turtle is an adult and he usually poops right after eating. I don't think it's what he just ate coming out, probably just "making room". And they do tend to eat it, as gross as that is.

Well, there is only a certain amount of room inside that tight hard shell....food goes in, and poop comes out. Same thing happens to Sheba....she tends to poop or pee right after eating.

If he's healthy, eating his poop won't hurt him. Netting or suctioning it out of the tank when you see it, though, will help keep the water cleaner, since it will break down over time, and turtles can leave bits of it behind even if they do eat it. I take it out of the tank when I see it.

yeah, wow. i took out the rocks and everything and cleaned it all out. i have already noticed the water cleaner, although turtletton still tries to put his head down into those rocks and look for something good. he seems healthy, so i say, onward!

I'm afraid it's normal for turtles to eat their poop. If it's any consolation, sometimes they outgrow it. Mine used to do it (I'd race him to it with a net) but not any more since he's been grown.

B's mom -- Small ones do poo more than adults. I feed my little ones every day and they poo like it. The adults poo less often but do poo larger amounts. I do believe that if I fed the little ones every hour they would poo every hour and want more. The little ones seem to put more strain on the biological filter and requires more water flow. That is how I handle it. b.
