General Care Discussion :: Shell issue

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Nov 08, 2007 2:16 am   Shell issue

I have two RES about 1 1/2 inches each. I've had these turtles for a few weeks and I've noticed this discoloration on this shell. It appears to be brown in between the scutes. The condition seems to be stable since I received them. It hasn't got better, it hasn't got worse. I'm not too sure what to look for as far as shedding goes or fungus. But their water is clean, well filtered, they spend a good amount of basking and swimming, and I believe have a strict healthly diet. Does anyone have any information to part with? Thanks!

holidae -- Without close up pictures it hard to say. I may just be normal and they are doing fine. If you water is clean and they are getting uva, uvb light and a warm basking area, so they can dry out, you may be just fine.

I believe that's just growth lines between the scutes. That's a sign that the turtle is growing so it's a good thing.
In your third to last picture it does look a little gray though- it might be beginning or mild shell rot. Since they're now basking a lot, it shouldn't get worse. I'd keep an eye on it and if it changes I'd look into a sulfa dip.

They are now on a sulfa dip bath for the next 7 days. I would like to think it is shedding, but the only picture of a shedding RES looked so perfect. Perfect scales crisply falling off. They seem to be almost breaking at the seams. Does anyone have any pics of their turtle shedding for comparison?

Mine had this. I was REALLY worried at first. I had no stores that were near me that had sulfa dip for turtles. Then lines just became growth lines for my turtle. I would think that your turtle is just growing. Good thing you are treating their shells though. Hopefully their shells will get better soon.
Good luck! And tell us how it goes with the sulfa dip!

I agree with the others the shells look a little funky but it could be shedding. Cute turtles by the way. I wish I had a yellow eared slider, they are wayyy cute.

Babies rarely develop shell problems unless they are damaged or injured in some way. When Gomie was that size, she had the same lines, only thicker....They look good to me. :)
