General Care Discussion :: What can I do to make my little guy bask

Hes sick and needs to bask.... but he wont. Ive checked the temperature of his water, it was high, like 82 but the stick on thermometer said it was 77 so I guess they dont read right? anyways my manual old school thermo says his waters about 80 right now, and cooling, and his basking area is a stead 90-92, close as I can get it..... hes got so easy acccess to it, I even put his favorite rock back there to climb on.. but he wont go..... any ideas???

Ive also wrapped a background all the way around so hes got all the privacy he could ever want... boggles my mind.

And another strange thing, the waters 80 somthing degrees.. yet he always seems to hang out at the heater.. he almost looks like hes hugging it....like hes cold.... so why not head out to bask where its 90 degrees????? Very strange.

I'm sure you've said this elsewhere, but his symptoms are???

I've never found stick-on thermometers to be that accurate, so I wouldn't really go by that one.

Are you sure he's not basking when you're not around?

as for basking when Im not around, I dont know but since I have his tank completly boarded up so he cannot see out, as far as he could know I an not home, Ive intentionally left the tv on noise level doesnts change but he never seems to get on the basking area... (I have a little hole to see though....

My turtles bask all the time, but once they see me coming they run into the water as fast as they can!! its weird, one time he got scared bc i jumped out of nowhere and he flinched so bad he like flipped over into the water!! lol

You can put something on the basking platform like a few pellets, and if you come back later and see that they've been disturbed, then you know he's been up there.

Oh ive done better than that, Ive setup my webcam in security mode on motion sensing recording any motion on his basking area. that will tell me.
