Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi Everyone,

I've have been a few threads re: gravid females and perfecting a nesting area( I have two females  .) There seems to be so many of us that are stressed or worried because of the fact that a lot them (the turtles) don't like to be taken out of their tanks and we stress whether or not they will lay and if they don't lay, then what :( ..... Anyway, I stumbled on these great little clips that give me hope that if I fail at making "just the right environment" for them, that egg-laying will still happen.... Thought you might enjoy these also.

Yeah when it is time for it to happen they will more than likely just do it into the tank. With no mail around you can obviously just remove the eggs and dispose of them since they wont be fertile.

That's not entirely true. Some females will refuse to lay eggs in the tank & become very egg-bound ("eggs won't come out"). If a female displays signs of being gravid, that is something that a turtle-owner should take very seriously because the longer the eggs are inside her body, the more likely they are to break inside her body (and this is almost always fatal if they break inside her).

Laying eggs in the tank is a sign that the female turtle is EXTREMELY desperate & can't hold on to them anymore.

I agree with you about the eggs being discarded.

Those poor girls look miserable. They could barely get out of the water.

Pretty sad to see those turtles in the videos. An appropriate nesting area is always recommended.

Those poor things don't even have anything to push against with their hind legs to make it easier to expell the eggs. The videos should be a reminder to you (and whoever watches them) of what NOT to do.

Read through this section on nests, it tells you how to prepare a proper nesting site for a gravid female.
