i notice that my res always bites at his front claws or the base of plants in tank. how do i stop this? he wont chew cuttle fish bones he'd about a year old

I would do a water change and check for ammonia and nitrate. Your res may have irritated skin from something in the water.

Your turtle has something bothering him. I have do idea except something is irretating his foot or the skin on his front foot. Check his front calws and the area around that foot. Having his water very clean is a start.

Is he shedding? Sometimes when they shed they pick at their legs. Sometimes they just do it out of boredom.
Sometimes they won't gnaw at the cuttlebone if it's too large. Break it up into small pieces and let it float around in the tank. With larger pieces, I'll attach it to the side of the tank with a veggie clip under the waterline. They will usually chew on that instead of the decorations....
