i havea res bout a year old and round 2.5 inches long is in a 10 gal tank with about 7.5 in of water is tha amount ok or too much for him i just raised from bout 5 inches

That tank is a little too small. You'll have to upgrade to a larger tank very soon. How is the rest of your setup (lights, heater, filter, ramp etc.)?

light heat and basking is fine. Just want to make sure thats not too much water

Do you have a submersible heater as well... you didn't mention it.

2.5 inches is a little on the small side for a year old RES. What are you feeding it?

he can swim very well so that is not to much water if anything its not enough.... the tank can be almost full of water just leave enough room for a basking area but the 10 gallon is to small for ur turtle. you should have 10 gallons for every in. of turtle sooo what i would do is buy the biggest tank you can get so you dont have to keep upgrading as he gets bigger

what do you use for lights?
what do you use for his basking?
and what do you use for heater?

c-glue -- More tank, more water, more heater, lights and filter. When these guys get out of their egg in the wild, they are in the water right away. They are good swimmers. When you get a larger tank you will need larger everything. These guys grow very fast.

You don't have to necessarily build anything. There are plenty of commercially available options before having to revert to building something, although the link that was posted is incredibly easy to follow with amazing results.
