General Care Discussion :: Will the vet take my turtle away.

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

My turtle is sick so I'm going to take it the vet tomorrow. I'm just wondering its illegal for me to have a turtle in my state (NC) will the vet take it from me* (I don't want him to). I don't want to lose my turtle, but I would rather not see him again than be responsible for him dying.

I suppose your best safe guard would be to call and ask. I imagine when you called to make the appointment they would have mentioned the legality of it then.

If your turtle needs to see a vet, then that is the priority. Most legal issues would more likely involve a fine.

Also: I see you're planning on getting a second turtle. If you already have one ill turtle, and it's illegal to keep them as it is, I'd strongly reconsider getting a second one. Turtles are very solitary creatures and don't need tank mates. In fact, most turtles need to be separated due to aggression so unless you have the funds for two permanent set ups for life, I'd stick with one turtle.

If the turtle needs a vet, it's your responsibility to get them there. As best as I can tell from an internet search, in NC you can own up to 4 turtles, so I don't think your turtle is illegal. If it's under 4", just say you got it when you were on vacation somewhere and didn't realize it was illegal to buy, but you take extra precautions to protect yourself from Salmonella. The worst that would happen is you would be fined, I've never heard of anyone taking the turtles away when they are illegal.
