General Care Discussion :: Cod Liver Oil

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Since my turtle's eyes are swollen, I did some research to find out about them.

Is cod liver oil the similar to fish oil?
Is the oil put on the eye? Or does the turtle eat it...
My turtle won't eat because it has a swollen eye, and the eye is raw red.

Are there other ways besides taking it to the vet to get it cured, I kind of can't afford it, and I was wondering...
since it won't eat...
how do I feed it carrots?
Carrots have high amount of Vita A, which should be good for a swollen eye, but my turtle WON'T eat the carrot.

Since the eye is swollen and likely infected, I'd suggest the Zoo Med eye drops over the cold liver oil. The drops soothe and address more issues than just vit a deficiency.

Once you get the eyes under control it's important to assess your set up and care methods to see how you can improve them so that your turtle is healthier. Usually eye irritation is due to having too strong a UVB light, a vitamin deficiency, or water quality issues.

Zoo Med? THANKS!
and its the lack of vitamen A, I fed it everything, but I never noticed that it didn't eat carrots
I found out when I started spying on my turtle, for 1 hour, I saw him eat everything, but no carrot...

Another food high in beta carotene that turtles really love is steamed sweet potato. It's pretty fattening so should be fed sparingly, but if your turtle doesn't care for carrots, maybe he'll go for sweet potato. My turtle likes it almost as much as he likes shrimp.
