It was Turtley!
As you may already know, Turtley is a ~7 year old turtle (he's been mine for about 3 years now) that i thought had topped out at exactly 5" SCL. For about 2 years, no growth at all, although he did shed his scutes a couple of times. I chalked up his small size to the awful care (or lack thereof) he got before i had him.
Lately, everybody that came over to my house had been telling me "wow, Turtley grew!" to which i would reply, "no, he hasn't grown for years". He has also been absolutely ravenous lately, even for his lettuce, which used to be a food of last resort. Nowadays, any and all vegetables i put in with him are gone within 10 minutes. It's great!
Anyhow...after hearing everybody telling me how big he looked, i examined him a little closer and noticed that the seams in between his scutes did indeed look wider than before, so i measured him, and to my suprise he measured exactly 5.5" SCL, 1/2 inch bigger than the last time i measured him, about 6 months ago. I weighed him for the fisrt time, and he weighs almost a pound, 15.7 ounces! I am just so proud of my little buddy!
Has anyone else ever exerienced a growth spurt after a long period of no growth? Any insights into what spurred this?
