In about a week I will moving to the other side of the state, about three hours away.

We have a Styrofoam container with the inside lined with one of those insulated bags. I was planning on just putting shredded paper in the bottom. Would that be safe or would he try to bite the liner? He does have one of those critter keepers but it is the small one and he HATED it when we got him. His container will be buckled in between the two cats in their carriers. And he will have his thermometer attached to his container. Is that an ok place to put him?

How long can he stay outside of the water without an harm happening to him. He is about 2.5'.

When I transported my turtle across the country, she stayed out of the water 8-9 hours a day while we drove. I did however mist her.
Your turtle should be fine for three hours or a few more. I would recommend setting up the aquarium as soon as you can. It takes a while for large aquariums to get to the right temperature, and then you can just put crush in and get on with the move in!

Van-Real - I would suggest that you keep a damp towel in the container and keep it warm (75 to80 degrees). They will do OK if he is not banging around in the container. It is important that you not let him get chilled and then back in warm water. Warm, cold, warm, cold will cause them to get RI. If you have an over nighter you will need a container to put him in. I have a cheap heater just for that purpose. I have had them cross country several times. Good Luck!!
