General Care Discussion :: Close call with the Xp3

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Well, I know i've read this somewhere in the past about if the suctuion tube on the end of the XP3 comes off, it could be dangerous and sometimes fatal.

I went to feed Ivan and Leo tonight, and Ivan was hanging out near the where the inlet is - not noticing the tube had fallen off. Leo ate happy and fine but it was strange Ivan did not come rushing.

I went to look and see what he was doing - and he was frantically moving underwater - his arm sucked 3/4 to his "shoulder" in the tube. I almost had a heart attack. I immediatly turned off the filter, and pushed him above the water with his arm still in the inlet - Fearing he may be close to drowning, after he took a huge gulp of air, and myself and him both panicking he came free out of it.

His arm is a swollen, and a little red in some places (not bleeding, just red from the suction). He definitely isn't favoring using that arm, but he does use it. I'll check on his arm in the morning and see if we need to make a trip to the vet.

Just a reminder/note to anyone who uses a filter with a strong inlet - Make sure you use aquarium glue to glue the end piece on, this could have been a very upsetting night which could have been prevented.

ps geez Ivan has all the bad luck, he was the turtle to escape from my "near escape proof" setup for a day and a half, and now this - his brother Leo always gets off easy.

Wow. Glad you found him when you did, he would have drowned.

Wow, definitely a close call. My husband called me the other day because he found my turtle had knocked off the inlet, but thank heavens it fell off at the joint that's way above the water (and tank for that matter). Though I was then worried that my filter motor was damaged. But all was well.

Keep an eye on his arm, but it sounds like you caught him at a good time!
