General Care Discussion :: MONTES DOING GREAT

[b]Some of you may know who my turtle monte is, my first turtle ever got him when he was about 4 months old, hes about 10 months now... Hes healthy as ever loves his veggies, pellets, fruits, haha hes a pig actually lol ...but i feed him once a day thats it... Im still not 100 percent hes a he but my fiance insists that we keep calling it a boy, i have reasonable doubts that its a girl but turtle is still to young to tell ....Sooo we added a new addition to our lovely 50 gallon tank...hes a baby very lil ....Monte was a lil butthead
the first few times we put him in there but today they were both basking together like best friends and it was the happiest moment ever!! cuz
i was worried it may not have worked out...so since we wont know his sex
for awhile his name is "lilttle dude" or lil guy hehe ill be posting pics of there new tank and them together in the picture section!! im one pround mommy, i never thought i would love my turtles soo much they truly are an amazing creature!!!

I'd really be careful about keeping them together especially if there is a size difference, bad things can happen.

You are supposed to quarantine new turtles for 90 days and adding a new little turtle to a bigger turtles tank is a bad idea. Too many babies have been killed this way.

monte was protective at first..but there best friends now ..little guy is a champion ..he can scare monte away if hes being a pest which is unlikely ..they get along great ..share food,bask together,play together ..there doing awesome...its been almost 2 weeks and so far so good!!

If you are attached to both of them it's still a better idea to seperate them into 2 seperate enclosures. As most people have experienced, they will eventually get into a fight over territory or food and if you are not home to stop them you will have a dead turtle.

Even if you are home and they fight on of them may need veterinary attention, and unless you have money to throw away. It's another reason to get them seperated using the money that you would spend on a potential emergency vet visit for a new setup for the other turtle. And I'm sure I won't be the only one saying this same thing.

The little one WILL end up dead. They may get along awesome for a little while but all it takes is one nip from the bigger one and the little one is gone.

Yes it is true, the little one will get killed. I learned the hard way and now I no longer have my little George.

okay i really dont..umm..care....im home 24/7 i watch them constantly and there doing fine!!! i havent seen monte flutter since the first day....and there making really good progress....not ALL turtles are the same.... and its also just your opinion and u dont know facts....this topic is closed!!!

our two turrtles got along just fine. well for the most part. yea spike did flutter at mike a few times. but he didnt show any other sign of agression other than that. they were always next to each other, mike was always haning on spikes shell even though spike was a butthead sometimes.

but mike passed away. but it wasnt because of spike. when my gf told me he was dead that was my fear was that they got in a fight. but it was the stupid filter intake tube that i didnt push down far enough and mikes food got caught in it in the middle of the night. I felt so bad that day...

That is fine, keep being ignorant about FACTS. Every person who has done this has ended up with a dead turtle and there is no way you can watch them 24 hours a day every minute of every day. All it takes is one nip and a few seconds.

its not ignorance its the FACT that im here with my turtles everyday( fye not employed) i see the progress there making and you dont, sooo your OPINION about my turtle ending up dead is a slim possibility beacuse not all TURTLES redearslider or not are gonna be the same ....also every time i walk in my room MONTE knows me and shes begging me to come say hi so in other words she very distracted easily!!! however i do appreciate the advice....but for someone to just read about "how my turtles are doing" and just assume he will end up dead is retarted just because it happend to you.....its like me saying i think ducks are gay but thats just my opinion right...alright then....

people are just telling you their experiences. there have been WAY more stories about people doing what you have done and it going wrong than it going right. and just because your home all day doesnt mean you will be able to watch them all the time. people here are just trying to help you. and actually it is a fact that RES are an aggressive species. you need to start showing a little respect to the people that are just trying to help you.

well i simply didnt ask for 6 people to tell me my turtle will end up dead....i was updating those who knew of monte....and the FACTS ARE im here and your there and your OPINIONS are not facts!! i faced my facts that i know what i know i see what i see my turtles 55 gallon is 4 feet away from my bed and my turtle(s) mean alot to me....and i was just making a point that its just your opinion just like its only my opinion to say something such as ducks are gay i didnt mean that i was just proving a point....im not mad and respect the advice but after trying to prove my point 3X'S people keep saying he will die....you dont know that... and its as simple as that. and i wasnt trying to use SYNONYMS !!! sorry if im a little too Californian !!

This site is here to help turtle owners, new and experienced alike. Some people aren't aware that they are putting their turtles into harmful situations, so we have to do what we can to offer the best advice. All anyone was trying to do was warn you about a bad possible outcome. Ultimately, it is up to you how to deal with your situation, but it's better all around if your 100% informed. Humans tend to have issues with personification and their animals. Like saying that your turtle is happy to see you and wants you to say hi. When, in truth, turtles don't have that emotion. When your turtle swims towards you excitedly, he's begging for food. Another issue is the fact that we think turtles feel things like loneliness and companionship. When, in fact, they don't. Turtles, RES especially, are territorial and prefer to live alone (unless there is enough space for everyone, like a pond). Now, occasionally some turtles can live together harmoniously, but this is the exception not the rule. They learn to tolerate one another, it has nothing to do with friendship. In general, RES get aggressive over space and food. You may never see any aggressive behavior like fluttering or biting, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. I'm speaking from experience on this. I originally had two turtles, thinking my little Mikey needed a friend. I got to turtles from the same tank and put them in one tank at my house. They never fought or anything, but what I didn't realize was that my Mikey was slowly starving the second turtle to death. It took almost six months, but the second turtle did die from starvation caused by aggression. Again, I'm not saying this WILL happen to you, but I would rather you be fully informed of what you could be dealing with. A good way to avoid this is to feed one turtle in a separate tank and to supervise their eating. This will ensure that everyone is getting enough food and if there isn't any other aggressive behavior, you should be fine.

Also, make sure to watch the tank size. You'll end up needed at least a 200 gallon tank if they can live together peacefully as adults.

Please don't take offense to any of my advice, or the advice of the other members. None of it was meant as an attack to you. We're just trying to look out for what is best for your new little turtle.
