as far as my knoweledge extends, none. the RES will be agressive towards all turtle species, not just its own.

I agree. More often than not, the RES will see any new turtle not as a great new buddy, but as someone who will steal his food. The aggressive nature of the RES takes over, and the new "buddy" will start getting bullied. They are considered an invasive species for a reason.

They are solitary turtles. they don't want a buddy, and they'll most likely be aggressive towards each other. also, I believe your not supposed to mix species.

Unless you have a pond - I wouldnt try any. RES can be aggressive esp in captivity. Ive seen some folks with mixed species tanks on other boards, but they tend to be smaller species and peaceful. RES are not good mixers. I think musks, maps and some painteds do well together (again no expert - some one else could/should correct me).

It's true that RES are solitary animals. But another thing to consider is the addition of a second turtle will result in you needed to get an even larger tank.

You can get a second turtle, but just give him his own enclosure.

I keep an eastern spiny softshell as well as res. When the RES go in the kiddie pool the softy comes with and there has never been a problem. They are also fed together when they are outside and even my cranky mama turtle doesn't mind the softy at all. I'm not sure about keeping them together 24/7. But those little guys can hold their own on land and in water. Kashy is 2 years old yesterday and Sandy my cranky girl is at least 5 or so and they get along quiet well.

musk turtle is a close cousin to a mud turtle, right? if thats true then musk turtles would not do well with painteds bcause they tend to be bottom walkers, so the high water of the painted turtle would not be very good for the musk.

at the HINC where i worked they had a mud and a slider together, i changed that as soon as i started working there, and gave winky her own tank

The eastern painted and the cumberland may so ok, but keep in mind that redears are aggressive and may not like company. If you decide to do this make sure the new ones are of equal size. Redears are bullies and may not get along with the new ones. Good Luck--
