General Care Discussion :: Basking

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

How often should a small turtle, almost 1" long, bask during the day? Whenever I walk into the room she (maybe she? ha) is basking. The water is around 78-80 degrees and her basking area is about 97 degrees. Just making sure that she should be out so often, but she does seem to love it =]

i used to be scared about my hatchling basking too much, but i dont think you have much to worry about.

if she doesnt have any other "weird symptoms" like breathing through the mouth not the nose, uneven floating without even trying, or swollen eyes, then you shouldnt have much to worry.

if anything, youre very lucky. some members here have hard times getting their turtles to bask at all. hopefully yours will shed in the next several months

She doesn't seem to have any symptoms. She doesn't swim as well as my bigger turtle, but she's learning. She's starting to catch fish so I think she's fine. Thanks for the reply!
