Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Nov 04, 2008 12:26 pm   feeding live fish / proper pellet feeding /

Having rescued this res, I have no idea if he has ever been given any live food. I put a few rosy's in over 24 hours ago and he swims right by them with no interest.

Ive been giving him pellets. Wardlys - feeding instruction is very vague. Basically feed a few pellets several times daily. He loves them and also has been nibbling on some carrot and strawberry.

Am i over feeding the pellets.

The ideal way too feed pellets is too feed him the amount that would fill his head if it was hollow every other day. You can keep feeding veggies daily and fruit should be a once a month treat. As for the rosy's you never know when they will eat them, but one day they will dissapear :)

You might want too look for a better pellet then Wardly's I have heard that they are the worse for turtles. HBM turtle bites, mazuri and reptomin are the best.

Depends. How big is your turtle? Turtles over 4" can be fed ONCE every OTHER day. If under 4", can be fed everyday. General rule of thumb: For pellets, do not give your turtle more pellets than can fit into his head (from his noise to the start of its red strip). Live foods/proteins should be given ONLY as a treat, once a month MAX.

Feeding instructions on pellet jars deno [!!!] they're talking about.

Hes pretty small. Hes resting in the tree. ( cracks me up, totally camos himself in the tree to sleep). When I measure do you go OVER the shell using the arc, or just a line measurement next to the shell. Im guessing hes about 3" line measurement.

You measure straight, without the curve.

Here's info on feeding your turtle. Everything you ever wanted to know:

http://www.redearslider.com/index_nutrition.html

For a 3" turtle, you can safely give him enough pellets to fit in his head if it were hollow (head only, not neck) every day. When he gets to be 4", cut back to a headfull every other day.

If it makes your turtle happy, you may break the pellets into several small servings a day, just so you don't exceed the total amount recommended. Use one of the 7 day pill boxes to measure out how much to feed every day so you don't accidently go over or under the desired amount.

Hes just a hair under 3 ". So approx the amount of pellets that would fit his head, once daily and when he gets to around 4 " every other day.

Got it. And Ill pick up some higher qualtiy pellets.

Thank You

PS picked up a small siphon pump and wow what a tool. I Just removed the turtle and with a few pumps and the nozzle resting on the bottom of the tank sucked up lots of debris.

Ill still have to properly clean the tank now and again but its a big help for a quick fix clean up.
