We have a babysitter lined up for Oliver next week. He is going to visit some friends of ours in his travel tank (not ideal I know, but NONE of our friends in the neighborhood are staying home for Christmas). We have taken Oliver to a babysitter before, but that was before we bought the big new tank. It's too big to transport, which means Oliver will be living in his old tank for the week, and his new tank will be sitting here at home, empty.
While Oliver is away in his travel tank, what do we do with the water in his big tank at home? I would like to unplug everything while we're gone, which means the filter will be off. My two biggest questions are:
1. Can we leave the water in his tank still for a week, filter off? His tank JUST finished the new tank cycle, and I hate the thought of starting over with fresh water when we return. But I also hate the thought of some nasty bacteria or fungus growing in the still water and making him sick when we put him back in. It's only a week. What do you think?
2. We have a DIY filter that's built with buckets. In order to keep the biomedia wet while the filter is off, can we just set the biomedia bucket down in the tank so it will be immersed for the week?
3. If I can leave the water still while we're gone, do you have any other advice on keeping the water quality healthy?
