This might be a stupid question...But would a Fluval 405 be too powerful for a 20 gallon? I have a crappy internal filter right now and want to upgrade but im afraid the output would be too great and cause a whirlpool of some sort within the tank. Is it possible to adjust the flow of the filter and would it be okay to just point the output at the wall to not cause a strong current?

Im going to upgrade my tank in the future. Don't know when yet but probably within the year or so. I have two hatchlings right now.

I think it would be fine. You can adjust the flow, but it's not good for the motor to do it long term. You should be able to adjust the direction of the output to lessen the current, or get a spray bar attachment. I don't rember if it comes with one or not, a lot of canister filters do.

by-05 The Fluval 405 would be ok, however make sure you cover your suction part so they don't get caught in it. You can have multiple intakes and discharges for the filter pump. You will have a bit of a swirl in the water but that is good and you will be happy with the water turn over. You will have more than 5 times water turn over (gph) and that is good. Good Luck! m.
