General Care Discussion :: Algae on the skin?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Jan 06, 2009 1:00 pm   Algae on the skin?

I have just purchased a res about 4-5 inches. I got him 2 days ago and have him in a 40 g. tank with a heat lamp, still need to get the uvb light. He told me he eats about 20-30 rosy red fish every 2 weeks. I plan on doing 20 every weekend.

My concern is, he has algae on his neck and legs. Its looks like dead skin almost just floating around on his neck and legs.
Are there any drops or something i can do to remove this algae?

Thanks in advance!

20 rosy reds a weekend is way too much. those should be limited to a few once a month.

is the stuff around is neck white flossy stuff? it could be skin shedding

Yes, the stuff around his neck is white and flossy. My first guess was that it was shedding skin, just wanted to double check.

Thanks for the help. I will make sure i back down the rosy reds and make sure to get him some other types of food like lettuce etc. as well.

Thanks again!

yeah thats just shedding skin. its normal although too warm of water can cause extra skin shedding.
have you read over the feeding section? you should be feeding a head full of pellets everyother day for a turtle that size and lettuce daily.

My turt's got those white and flossy stuffs underneath her chin, her feet and her tail as well. They could grow to about an inch long but could be easily remove with a Q tip. They tend to get less after basking. So, they're just shedding skin and don't need to worry about them?
Thanx!

Sam-igs -- The rosies are too much. It is too much protein. I suggest that you use a good pellet and give the rosies every week or so. The pellets are a well balanced diet. Just add a little calcium every week and they will do well. If the skin is hanging around the tank a long time you may want to upgrade your filter enough to exchange the water at least 5 times per hour. m.
