Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Jan 17, 2009 8:44 am   UPDATE: 2/15/09 What Is a normal growth rate? White spots?

How big is your turtle?About 1.8 Inches measured with a bendy ruler
How long have you had it? Nearly 5 Months

What is the water temperature?about 79 degrees
Did you use a thermometer? Yes
Are you using a water heater? Yes
How much water is in there? about 18 gallons
Are you using a water conditioner? Yes
Are you using any filtration? Yes

What is the basking temperature? about 91 degrees
Is there a basking light? Yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? Zoomed Dock
What kind is it or what is it made out of? Foam?
Is there a UVB light? Yes

What have you been trying to feed it? Jurassi Diet Aquatic Turtle food, lettuce, blueberries, rarely dried shrimp, the occasional feeder fish if she catches one (Rosy reds)
When was the last time your turtle ate?Last Night

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure?20 Gal
Is the tank near a window? No
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? Not really (My bedroom)

Have you read the Basic Care section? No
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? No

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? Not at all she seems to be healthy.

Well I got her in September from a little boy who sold her as miniature in one of those little turtle death traps. I brought her home did research and found this website. I now know there is no such thing as miniature turtles (Well maybe?) and I read how to care for her so I moved Her in to my 20Gal that was left over after my Hedgehog died. Now she has a good filter (For 20 gals) Rosy Reds,(Right now really small goldfish I know goldfish aren't great but they were out of Minnows and I like the convenience of fish If i'm away)(The Lights are on a timer) So when I measured her she was about an inch and a half now she is approaching 2" (Which means they are most likely yearlings right?) Well I just want to know if this sound like a semi-normal growth rate?

Sounds good so far, though I think most people with hatchings have faster growth - which isn't necessarily better.

So she sounds pretty good then? BTW another question I have If you would be so kind is that she has few white spots on her shell I don't think It's rot but maybe mineral deposits... I'll post some pics If needed

I think most people have their RES hatchlings at 3 or 4 inches after the 1st year. White is usually fungus or mineral deposits. Neither is necessarily an indication of bad care, but fungus can be such a pain to deal with. Pics of a dry shell would be helpful.

I'm not exactly sure what it could be, though I would guess that it is fungus. Is it spreading? It does look like your turtle will shed soon, so that might address the situation.

I microwave a piece of sweet potato then cut it up into pieces. Spot loves it so much he swallows whole whatever I put in his tank - no matter the size.

Your RES badly needs to shed. And, what looks to be a slight upturn of the marginal scutes (around the edge of the shell) makes me wonder what and how much your turtle is being fed...
