General Care Discussion :: Gravel = Bad!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Wow! I want to thank whomever posted the post about removing gravel ASAP! I just did it tonight and while I was feeding them carrots just now, one of the turtles crapped out 5 yellow pebbles.

I hope no permanent damage has been done, they've been in a gravel tank for 6 months now.

I'm glad I found this website, it has probably saved my turtles from dying in under a year.

F-86 They will eat the gravel and there is no problem if they can pass them. The problem is when they clog up the system and they cannot pass them. I changed over to river rocks large enough that they cannot get them into their mouths. My system is rigged to pull the water through the bottom. m.

I think a lot of us started out with gravel in our tanks! Just be sure to scoop out any gravel he poops out, so they don't eat it again!

Bulldog is right, remove any gravel that you find in the coming days. Also, watch for poop in your tank. If your turtle isn't pooping regularly, you might have to take him to the vet.
