It was probably speedy (a big conservative) finally realizing that obama (a big liberal) was his tank mate!

But on a more serious note, it could be a respiratory infection. How big are they and what is the water temperature? Can they bask?

If it is a respiratory infection than it is very very serious and you will have to see a vet as soon as possible to catch it before it gets worse.

The only time turtles really make a noise is if they are having difficulty breathing from a respiratory infection.

Go see a vet asap.

It very well was your turtle's claws scratching on the surface of the tote. Turtles have no vocal cords, so they cannot make noise. But they can make a sort of hissing noise as they pull their heads into their shells. If you don't think it was one of those two noises, you need to make sure that they are able to breath and don't have some sort of infection or mucus buildup.

but i don't think they have a respiratory infection..
they look and act normal to me...

I don't necessarily think that any noise coming from a turtle means that they are sick. My turtle, Squirt, only made noises kind of like the ones you were talking about when i took him out of his habitat and put him in a container when i was cleaning his tank out. I think they make noises when they are stressed and when they are in a place that they don't feel comfortable. IE: He knows and loves and has gotten used to his aquarium and his habitat, when taken away from the only living quarters he knows, he freaks out and tries to escape back to his home... letting out frantic noises in the process. No matter what type of animal it is... If it is in panic mode because it's freaking out when it's taken from the only place it is accustomed to, then it is a NORMAL animal instinct. Plain and simple.
