General Care Discussion :: cuttle bones??? i can only find ones for birds....is it ok??

well i have been reading up on this site about cuttlebones, i found out some things about them and would like one for my turts , i looked around and all i could find is cuttle bones for birds ?? i have one with me, i was just wondering if it would be ok for the turts to nibble on???
any ideas

IMPORTANT!!! Be sure you take a knife and peel off the hard backing from the cuttlebone. You'll see what I mean. The turtles can't digest it...it is sharp and may cut their mouths or insides. The cuttlebone itself is soft and powdery.

No, it really doesn't have any smell to it, unless it's been soaked in something...

I know what you're talking about.I would actually say it "stinks",but it does have a peculiar smell.

I've found the "turtle bone" to be much thicker, though. The cuttlebone I find in the bird section is always so thin and sad looking and by the time you get the back off there is nothing left

I wish I was smart enough to realize the self explanitory-ness of the flavored cuttlebone :p I thought it was cute, bought it and my whole tanke turned orange and I had to dump all the water, no amount of half cleaning it did any good

Simba you are right, when I buy "turtle bone" it is much thicker than the cuttlebone the pet store has for birds. I can't even find turtle bone in my local stores, I buy it on-line. Auto119 look for the sticky on cuttlebone it has great information and pictures. I give my turt a small piece every 3 to 4 days.

I think the thickness of cuttlebone can vary, and have seen some Turtle Bones that are just as thin as some pieces of cuttlebone. I always try to "inspect" the pieces and take the ones that have the greatest edible amount to them.

I've also found that some cuttlebone tends to have more of a smell than others, and it's usually pieces that have some darker areas in them that have a stronger smell.
