It's not a good situation, I can tell you that much. And you are only 14? This is a lot of stress for a 14 year old. First and foremost, you CANNOT worry about your pets in the case of a natural disaster. You don't know if something ever will happen, and if it does, first thing is to save you and your family. Your turtles will be left to fate, but everyone who has pets knows that. I mean, right now, if there was a fire where I live, it's likely that all of my pets will die. My cats and turtle *might* survive if they can escape on their own. But my mice and fish will die because they are trapped. Do I worry about that daily? No, because I would go crazy! Even if I was home with them when it happens, I can't guarantee they'll survive or that I'll survive. Bad things happen, but they don't happen often.

As for big earthquakes, it may be in your best interest to get a large plastic bin to sit your tanks in. If an earthquake happens (and the building survives), it's likely that glass tanks will break, so you can help to prevent lots of water loss using plastic.

If the garden is secure and the turtles can't escape off of the property, you can take them out there for a bit each day for extra sun and space. You shouldn't leave them out there because they need water to survive. And as you said, other people can play with or move them around.

The best suggestion I can give you, and I know it sounds rough, but I would say that you should downsize your collection. 9 turtles is a lot for anyone to deal with, in terms of needed tank size (almost 1000 gallons for all of those turtles), in terms of eggs being laid, in terms of filtration and water and ... Is there a local school or university you can donate some to? Do you have any friends that are interested in having a pet turtle? I would say that with a 55 gallon and an 83 gallon tank, you can probably sustain one male and one female, but that's it. Anything more and they will become aggressive, ill, dead, ...

The plastic bin is a good idea if you're really worried about quakes.

Here in Canada, I worry about the power going out during the winter due to powerlines snapping. Ice can be a real jerk sometimes. However, like CG said, over-stressing is bad. If something happens, it happens; nothing we can do about it beyond adapting to it.

I can't imagine having 8 turtles. My friend has 8, 7 of which are rescued sliders of different sizes. They are in different tanks, but he doesn't have the gear for them all... it can get smelly if he gets behind on the turtles. I'm trying to convince him to part with some. There are plenty of zoos and schools around here, and they are all in good health.

just curious. Do you have uvb and heat lamps with basking areas on all of those tanks? And water heaters with sufficient filters on all of those tanks? That sounds pretty expensive
2 1/2 inch RES Mikey
55 gallon tank
Homebuilt sump filter at around 300 gph
3 African Chiclids in a separate tank.
