General Care Discussion :: i cant find a herb vet near me!! help!

i was calling a vet not so far from me earlier this week, and someone told me the vet that treats reptiles is a herb vet, but right now i called again to ask about the appointment for tomorrow and i thought i'd ask again if she was a herb vet, and the reception said she wasnt sure, and that the vet specializes in a lot of animals, im so skeptical.......cause i think the last vet i went to told me to give my res too much doses of antibiotics and he died.

does anyone know how i can find a herb vet? and am i fine with this vet or no? i can still drop by tomorrow and see?? please give me some ideas!! i HAVE to go tomorrow..my flight is next week.

This thread has the info for herp vets. As long as you go to a good, reputable vet, you should be okay with a vet that specializes in a lot of animals. You mainly want to look for someone who treats more than just cats and dogs.

They often advertise as vets who treat "exotics". If the vet doesn't know about turtles, they should say so and refer you to someone who does.

My little patches was never the same after he was taken to a bad vet. So I would make sure that he or she knows what they are doing. don't be scared to ask questions .

any suggestions? what questions to ask to know that they are a good/bad vet and that i could trust them?

ASk them random fcts about turtles that you could find on here.. but just ask as if you did not know them. And ask point blank DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT TURTLES .

I had a turtle that was called a pink belly side neck looking like he looked like this .



But any who she/he Said that my turtle had brain issues do the fact that my SIDE NECK turtle would always turn his head to the side .

im still so doubtful though...ok so even if i find out the vet doesnt know much about turtles..i still have to pay for checkup? i dont know what to do...i dont want to give my turtle the wrong doses again, but this is a different one and an adult too..so it might be better...

You should be able to ask the vet about their qualifications without scheduling an office visit. Any decent vet should have no problem answering those questions. In fact if you call ahead to make sure they aren't too busy, they should even let you look around their facilities.

Yeah, you can tell a lot about a vet's office based on the receptionist. If they are only interested in scheduling an appointment or quickly put you on hold when you call, they are probably too busy of an office (tends to be this way with cat/dog vets). You want a receptionist who will answer questions for you as well. Ask the receptionist if the vet treats turtles. Ask about how many turtles have been treated there. Ask about reptiles. Find out if you can speak to the doctor (sometimes you need to leave your number so they can call you between appointments, that's perfectly okay!).

As for the doctor, don't bother asking them turtle facts or anything, a turtle vet doesn't need to know everything about turtles like we do on here! But you can ask the vet how frequently they've treated turtles. As Joey said, if they say something obviously wrong about your turtle (like side-neck turtles having their neck to the side ...), you can always refuse further treatment. You will still likely be asked to pay for the office visit, but at least your turtle will be safe. Joey might be able to recommend a vet in SC.
