General Care Discussion :: IMPORTANT!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Apr 21, 2009 12:28 am   IMPORTANT!

Horviss has successfully been living with two goldfish for about two weeks now! He does not seem tempted by them at all...luckily.

BUT we picked up some "turtle treats" today and turns out they are literally little shrimp, eyeballs and all! We gave him a few and he gobbled them right up and was searching for more long after they were gone. So we gave him a few more...and he gobbled them up again! I am thrilled he loves his treats, but my concern is that if I continue feeding him dead shrimp will he get the "blood tooth" and be more likely to hunt down his buddies, the goldfish?

Any advice, comments, observations and ideas pertaining to this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Here's what I know :) Turtles will eventually eat the fish, even if it's larger. They
can tear the fish piece by piece. I just hope my turtles will leave my fish alone
for a long time.

Treats should be given sparingly, like once a month. Horviss ate the shrimps
happily probably because they smell better to Horviss.
