General Care Discussion :: Green tank water

Hey all,

I've had my 40g breeder tank since Christmas now and no matter what I do, the water turns green. And this isn't algae because there aren't any green particles floating around, but its the water itself that turns pretty much grass green.

I've tested the water at the local pet store and everything appears normal. I have an MVB, use tap water with water conditioner, water temps are set at 70F, and i use an XP3.

Last week I cleaned out everything and used bleach to clean the tank and ornaments. After 2 days I started to see hints of green again and now its again so green I can't see from the front to the back of the aquarium.

Any idea why...or how I can fix this! Turtles don't seem to mind it though...

I'm having the same problem with my tank.

My filter is a fluval 304 packed like this:

1st stage: porous sponges
2nd stage: bio-max
3rd stage: carbon/ammonia remover (one side) + nylon stockings (other side)
4th stage: "Fluval" bio-max

Any ideas or suggestions would really be appreciated.

the water Temp is about 70 - 75 degrees.

My tank has about 10 gall water in it now.

Is either tank near a window or in a really lighted room? How long are the lights on for?

my tank is by my front door so i guess there is some windows. but my old tank has been in that same spot and it had no problems. Lights are on for 12 hours a day.

My tank is in direct sunlight for 1- 2 hrs a day, so this must be it.

I also noticed its a lot greener during the sunny hours. I'll put a cover on over the window to help keep the sun out.
