Usually a RES can be considered at least a "sub-adult" when they're about 1 year old, or about 4". This is when you should start feeding less often.
You should be able to find many kinds of filters and heaters at a pet store. Even places like wal-mart carries them. For turtles, we recommend an external, canister filter, since they can hold more media.
A RES should have a basking area where it can completely dry off, top and bottom. He should be able to access this area whenever he chooses. You will need a UVB light and incandescent light for heat. You can find UVB lights at most petstores. It's recommended that you get a 5.0 (5%) UVB, and 26 watt.
