General Care Discussion :: Whats safe to put in tap water? AquaSafe ok?

I'm needing to know what I can put in my tap water that is safe for my slider. Is Aquasafe ok? And how long should I wait to put my turtle in with it? I changed her water yesterday and put some reptisafe in there but it seems to bother her eyes even after i let it set. Shes in a 55 gallon tank. Thanks and any help is very appreciated

If your water is chlorinated, you want to add a dechlorinator or let the water sit for 24 hours. Any dechlorinator is fine, many of us use ReptiSafe. Once you have added it, you can put the turtle right in. You can put the turtle in even without it, but often that will irritate your turtle's eyes. However, I've never had an issue with ReptiSafe. Did you follow the directions? Is it possible you added too much (even though it shouldn't have any adverse affect)? Is your UVB too strong and irritating the eyes?

I would recommend trying a 50% water change and don't add the ReptiSafe to the water this time. That will further dilute the existing amount. You can try another dechlorinator with that batch, or if you can let most of it sit for 24 hours you don't even need it.

Yeah... You really dont need anything unless you are doing a huge water change.

The only thing that those products do is remove chlorine, and sometimes have beneficial bacteria.

Chlorine can hurt the turtles eyes if it is strong enough. If you think your water has a strongish chlorine flavor or smell, you should use it.
