To me, the Aquaclear 20 is too underpowered for a 10-gallon tank---I used to use an Aquaclear 50 in a tank that size.
To lessen the noise, keep the water level higher and silicone a piece of plexiglass to the lip so the water doesn't drop that much before it hits the water in the tank. I used to have the tip of the plexiglass just touching or a bit under the water. BTW, if you do use the plexiglass, make sure the sides of the edge that goes into the water are rounded so there aren't any accidently poked eyes.
