General Care Discussion :: Internal water filter vs Water filter that hangs outside?

I have an Aquaclear 20 right now for my 10gallon turtle tank. But it is very noisy especially when the water pours out of the spout. How effective are internal water filters that are submersible? Do they filter the water just as well?

I think as long as the capacity of the filter matches the requirement of the tank,
it should be fine. However, internal filter takes up swimming space for your turtle.

Can you add something below the spout to reduce the splashing noise?

Just like i said in your other filter post...Those filters are useless.
Get a good canister filter.

For a ten gallon tank, a cannister filter would be a little much.

An internal filter would take up swimming space, but it wouldnt make noise. I think you should try and find something to attach to your filter to minimize the noise.

I've tried adding something but with no luck. I'll look into a canister filter. How loud are those filters?

Depends on how the water falls into the tank really. If you put the output in the
water, virtually noiseless (except for the motor hum in the filter, which is not much).

To me, the Aquaclear 20 is too underpowered for a 10-gallon tank---I used to use an Aquaclear 50 in a tank that size.

To lessen the noise, keep the water level higher and silicone a piece of plexiglass to the lip so the water doesn't drop that much before it hits the water in the tank. I used to have the tip of the plexiglass just touching or a bit under the water. BTW, if you do use the plexiglass, make sure the sides of the edge that goes into the water are rounded so there aren't any accidently poked eyes.
