General Care Discussion :: Is she possibly gravid?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Oct 22, 2009 10:39 am   Is she possibly gravid?

It is 730 am and all night long momo has scared me awake with a thudding sound on her basking area and I just ignored looking and heard her fly back into the water lol. But since I was hearing the sound over and over and I'm getting grumpy lol I turn around and start watching her.

She is trying to climb up the wall of her basking area( which is egg crate) and escape.

Momo is female and about a good 6-7 inches now.

She has no male tank mate, but is it possible she is holdng eggs and I need to start a nesting box?

Oh btw, momo has had a lot of alone time lately since I'm only at this house half of the week, so I never pick her up much any more. Although this summer I was taking her outside to a pool. And I took her out a month ago for photos. Anyways to get to the point she used to freak out and try and bite me for a few seconds then stop, but when I picked her up just now and was freaking out kicking like crazy and was peeing all over my floor so I put her back of course.

Is it possible she is lonely? Yet I thought they don't get lonely, maybe I'm wrong.

to me it sounds like she will lay soon. i would build a nesting area if i were you. i know there are pics on here of nesting areas, i remember one i really liked it was like mulch/dirt/sand mixed together in like a sandbox and in the middle was a little like 8 gallon bin for the turtle to get in the water. u could just add a simple one to ur tank though haha

Have your tried to gently feel for eggs?

Does this restless behavior occur at the same time daily? Is she responsive to you during this time?

I tried feeling for eggs and felt nothing, she has not been doing it since I have been home. I was gone for a week. I think she was just seeing if it was possible lol

Spike tries to escape about every other time she goes up to bask. I have had her checked twice by the vet now thinking she might be ready for eggs, but she hasn't had any yet. I do have the components for a nesting box, but I think th escape attempts are normal behavior.
