General Care Discussion :: Turtle talking a lot

I have my turtle tank in my room and I have two young RES. I got them both together back in May. They have started "talking" in the middle of the night. I usually feed them around 8 pm and turn the UV light off around 10 pm. In the middle of the night one or both of them start making noise that I have never heard before. Kind of a whining noise. I checked on them they seem absolutely fine. The first time I thought one was stuck or hurt but they are just in the water with their head sticking out making noise. Is this a warning sign of something else? Is it completley normal?

Welcome. More info about your set-up would be helpful.

Are they active? Do they bask? Are their eyes clear?

What's the water temp and basking area temp?

I have them in a 55 gallon tank about 3/4 full.
Water temp is about 79F.
Basking temp is 90F-95F. A bit harder to keep that constant.
They bask often.
They are very active.
Eyes are clear.

They were doing it again last night. Its almost like they are trying to get attention like a baby crying or an animal sending out a mating call.

more information would be helpful, it might be a sympton of RI, please keep an eye on their behaviour.

are they eating and defecating like normal?

when basking, do they open their mouth often?

do they swim in an erratic manner?

If your turtle has any more of the symptoms listed, it's likely to assume that one or even both of your turtles has RI. If this is the case, please seek vet care pronto. RI is the equivalent to a very bad cold/flu, or even like "walking pneumonia" in humans.

Both seem normal.

I haven't noticed them opening their mouths but they both stretch out very far looks like they are sunbathing.

do they swim in an erratic manner?

Not erratic at all.

I checked the RI symptoms thread and nothing else matches.

i had one RES died of RI. when it started the RES just did the whining kind of sound, eating and defecating and swimming normally... the condition worsen after a week, and by the third week it was gone....

keep monitoring.. the moment you notice other symptons in the link, it's time to go to the vet.

in the meanwhile, it might be good if you can bump up the submersible heater a few degrees up and separate the turtle if possible.

RI is really contagious, seperating them would be the best bet for right now
