General Care Discussion :: Is it reccommended to feed RES by hand? How does one do so?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Nov 18, 2009 8:20 pm   Is it reccommended to feed RES by hand? How does one do so?

Is there a certain way that I should feed her by hand? Will this make her less nervous/skittish around me? I saw a video that showed a RES "shaking" its owners hand. My RES, Hazel, seems scared of me whenever I enter the room that her tank is in.

Also, is it bad for your turtle if you change the water often? If my water stays clear, do I still need to change it weekly?

Thanks. Your help is really appreciated. The pet store in my town is not helpful at all.

i do feed my 2 RES by hand and they just love it. it also makes them to be more familiar with your presence.

if you're feeding pellets, you can try holding one, dipping it into the water a bit and hold it close to them and let them come to you.

how frequent do you change your water at the moment? it also depends on the type of filter you use. with a good filter, you may not change that often, but a small one you may need too. as long as you let the replacement water sit for at least a day before changing it is good enough.

depends how big your turtle is, because you will probably get bitten, instead of using my fingers i use a pair of chopsticks to feed my 11 inch female, and when she clamps down on a chopstick its with such force it would and has made me bleed

Feeding them by hand can often get them more comfortable with you, and it's certainly worth a try. If you are worried about biting, you can start off by holding the food on the tip of a pair of tweezers and wiggling it around under water to get attention. After a while of doing that, you can probably start using your fingers. That's one method of doing it.

My turtle is very comfortable with my presence, but she is also now 2+ years old and I have never hand fed her. It just takes time ...

As for water, frequent water changes can "hurt" your turtle and ultimately your bacteria cycle if you have one established. What is your setup like? How big is your tank, what kind of filter?

If you change your water too frequently and have a bacteria cycle, it will kill off your bacteria, but you need the proper filter to get a good bacteria cycle going. If you just have a stand-alone tank, changing it too often gets time consuming and things like chlorine in our water supply can chafe at the turtle's skin. If you don't change it enough, the breakdown of turtle waste will become smelly and ultimately have to many nitrates/nitrites in the water which can again chafe the skin or hurt the eyes.

I would recommend taking a good look at your tank setup and reading the recommendations on the parent site (www.redearslider.com). For instance, my tank, I clean out my filter every 6-8 weeks and do a 25% water change every 2 weeks or so, and fill up the water due to evaporation as needed. I *never* clean my tank because the filter does it for me! But with a larger tank (currently 40 gallons), it's just not an option to dump it out and refill that often.

r-10 I feed all mine by hand. Offer them food by hand. They may be a bit skittish but you have to wait them out. The hungrier they get the more curious they get. It may take a few days. Good Luck!

I also handfeed Kame...she can measure distance, giving her a less than 1cm cuttlebone is a common thing for kame...and she never once bite my hand, just the cuttlebone. I never handfeed kroten with food less than 5 cm because she tends to bite hand.

To make turtle comfortable is time!! I've learnt that with Kroten

Firstly they like eating food without a challenge. So food above water isn't helping establishing a relationship. Secondly, they need to swallow water to swallow food because they have no saliva. I've known cases where a terrapin eats food on ground and chokes to death. Don't feed them with fingers please.

i feed them by hand when they are in the water, so they'll dip their head in immediately after that!

Yup! always handfeed them in the water!

Tho sometimes I did it on the ground near their tank for the sake of taking their video << shame on me :(
