General Care Discussion :: My oh my how time has gone by... Nikos growing up !

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Dec 15, 2009 6:23 pm   My oh my how time has gone by... Nikos growing up !

They say a picture says a thousand words so hows this heh... Niko has come quite a long way since I got him/her on 9/24/2008. On a related note, the whole him/her thing is getting quite old. So... when might I be able to sex Niko ?

Whats really cool and slightly shocking is how far Niko has come since the last weigh in on 2/21/2009.

Wow thats spiffy compared to my chicken scratch written on a piece of paper lol.

As for sexing i would say soon. He should start showing if he gonna be a male Watching my turtles the males always showed signs of being male around 3+inches. So if he/she doesnt get long claws and a bigger tail by 4inches you have a female.

Heh, I use similar excel sheets to track the growth for pretty much all my animals reptile wise. Comes in quite handy when you wana take a quick look.

So it's males then that have the long tail and big claws ?

I just hope Niko continue to grows so nicely like seen between the Feb 09 and yesterdays weigh in heh.

Man, I wish my turtle had such a cute growth chart! She was like 1.5" when I got her in late September, 2007, and by the next September, she was already well over 4"! Now I think she's around 6.5", her growth has significantly slowed now, though.

Males have the long claws and have a longer, thinner tail. Though, the tail is often harder to tell without having another turtle to compare to. By a year old and 3.25", you should be seeing some growth in the nails if Niko was a male, so if you haven't yet, I wouldn't hold out too much hope that he is. I've heard about like 2" turtles on here that already have their Wolverine claws ...

Well, the nails look long to be but my definition of long could be someones definition of small. I would post a pic but I lost the digi cam ;-/

at first I thought my females were males but long means weirdly long.
I have two female red ear sliders.
Chimpy - 5.5 inches
Chompy- 6.0 inches
Both were born about 7/2007
Got them -- 9/2007

Wow, that's a nice growth chart! I don't know if you can tell yet...You might want to wait 'til Niko gets a little bigger. Maybe around 4-4 1/2 inches. From what I've learned, you can normally tell when they're about 4-5 inches or bigger!
