General Care Discussion :: No heating light

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 1:47 am   No heating light

I am a new owner of two baby turtles. I have not been able to purchase a heating lamp yet for them. Tonight I went and bought one, and the bulb was missing from the package. It seems that my boys are going to have to go another night without heat and I am worried about them. The water is quite chilly.
What should I do?

about the water you should use an water heater,

about the lamp,if its not an mercury vapor lamp it will give no uvb. You can use an general 100 watt bulb for heating, its pretty much the same thing as those heating bulb except in a different package and at an lower price :P.

It sounds like you need a uva light for warmth, a uvb light for their metabolsim for their shell health and a water heater to keep the water warm. Having turtles aren't cheap. Next you will be a good filter pump to keep the water clean.

mhill has it correct. Next, will be a good filter with the proper gph turn over.

AluvS4life, you need two different sources of heat. A submersible water heater is used to maintain water temp (75F for older RES, 78 for younger RES). They usually have a thermostat, so you just need to leave it plugged in once it is set.

For basking (I think that's what your topic is in reference to), you can use a regular incandescent bulb for basking. There are several options for basking heat, but the main idea is to provide warmth to entice basking.
