General Care Discussion :: Feeder Mice and Lizards?

I live out in the desert and it is pretty easy for me to go out in the morning and catch like..20 lizards... How healthy is it to feed RES live lizards? there not HUGE lizards and they dont really bite hard at all, and i am 100% sure my RES can kill them no prob, but is it healthy at all? im sure they eat lizards in the wild....

Also, Ive seen people feed pinky mice to there baby RES turtles. Do you think a Full Grown RES, or THREE Full grown RES could take out a live mouse?

I would in no way recommend feeding wild feeders. They can have parisites that could then pass on to your turtle.

Also lizards and mice aren"t part of a healthy diet. Pellets and veggies are.

Do you want to feed your turtle mice for enjoyment??

And if you do decide to feed mice at least give them a hard hit on the back of the head so he wont have to suffer while getting his body rippd open by 3 res.

Dont get me wrong i feed my ball python live mice all the time but thats more of a instant kill and in this case you have the option to feed your turtle non living things i don"t have that option with my snake

Actually you can buy frozen feeder mice for your snake so there is alwasy a way to not feed live, but some snakes dont like dead feedings but Yes, its all 100% Enjoyment haha! I know it mite sound mean but hey...its the food chain.

Even feeder animals deserve to be treated as humanely as possible. If you really want to go the mouse route, at least be kind enough to buy frozen.

i agree. but i still wouldnt feed my RES mice. id just stick to feeder fish (not goldfish tho)

I did read that gold fish were bad for them all the time somewhere but I dont believe that.

I do know goldfish are bad for some other types of fish like Oscars tho, gives them "Hole in the head" disease

i figure its a cheap fish so let um eat it i fed my 2 adult res goldfish for years and nothing ever happened

Yeah I dont think it really matters, its not like Gold Fish have extra parts that other fish dont that are just magicly bad for turtles lol...

and im not about to go out and buy 30$ on some 3$ a piece fish lol..

i know its kinds ridiculous spending so much in fish but im thinking about getting some male and female guppies so they will breed and make my turtles have lots a food lol

If you do that, spend a little extra and get the Fancy Guppies, the big ones. or Mollies, Mollies breed like CRAZY just like Guppies. Dont get the ugly little crap guppies tho cuz thats just a waist...my turtles had a hard time seeing those ones. but them big ones, should be no problem...another good fish to breed are chilids There pretty easy to breed
