General Care Discussion :: Another two RES [Wrong Section]

Yup, you can guess it. People are still dropping off RES at my house because I tend to have "low morality rates" when I raise turtles. Right now, I have two more hatchling somebody brought in from China town, which I put in my hatchling habitat.
They're all about quarter size but yeah. Might as well turn my house into a turtle rescue home since there's none in my area. The only problem I have is following the "10 gallon" rule, which I can easily follow if I raised only one turtle. I never really had a choice in having these turtles, it was accept them or let them be released in the freezing cold rain. Right now I'm just asking the community to suggest me some names that they like.
EDIT: Just realized, posted this in the wrong section. Had too many tabs up and clicked the wrong one. If a mod minds moving this to another secton then I would be grateful.

Sorry i dont have names for your turtles,i know the 10 gallons rule is not easy to follow if you are short on money,but if you plan on making some turtle rescue thing you might be interested in getting an preformed pond container which is cheap and will do the job for all your turtles.

I know some people who run turtle rescues here in Canada and it's virtually impossible to follow that rule. Considering that the turtles are just "in transit" since the purpose is to find them good homes, I guess it's okay if they're a little cramped up. Most of them are happier like that than they were with the people who abandoned them.

Nah, I don't plan on turning my house into a turtle rescue, I just plan on trying to take care of turtles the best I can. The turtles are mostly hatchlings and yeah, they're pretty excited. Most of the owners think they're like cats or dogs, they can just release them anyway and the animal control would just pick them up...... which they actually don't do very well in my area.
Not only am I short on cash for the 10 gallon rule, I'm also short on room for those tanks if I could afford them. I could very easily make a pond in the backyard if I wanted to since I have a pool..... over 1000 gallons. That could make the 10 gallon rule easy but the problem is that I'm young and my parents won't let me doing it even if I tried. They don't mind me getting turtles as long as I still have my grades and all that. It's also too cold here for me to allow a pond. xD The water freezes over at the top.
If people want a turtle then I like to ask if they have a good setup already because I also don't want them going to a bad home just for them to die.

you should check out 2nd hand stores.. I got my tank for a really cheap price (sorry i dont remember) and i've seen online where people would use the inflatable pools as a home. You should also find out if there are any turlte rescue centers or maybe a zoo that will take them in. im assuming zoos will take in only older turtles but hey it's better then having to throw them in a lake when they grow. I live in toronto, so I saw alot of red eared sliders at the toronto zoo I think they are in partnership with this turtle rescue mission.
as for names:
Ying and yang, I loved the named Darwin! I had named my turtle darwin but unfortunately he passed away. Ross?? lol wow im bad with names..

I'm in Richmond, California. Tried to find one but then there isn't one, if you could find me one then I would be happy. I would use an inflatable pool but then I don't have room for one. The nearest zoo to me is in Oakland and I don't think they'll be accepting some small turtles. I would bring it to the local PetSmart but then they would put it in with their large 6 inch RES which I think she would eat it because she looked bored and sad when I last saw it 2 days ago. She also had some pyramiding.

get a couple of giant rubbermaid tubs from walmart. probably come in under 20 bucks.

I was planning on doing that, except the problem is that I don't have any room. lol
I think they're fine right now. I might get a 70 gallon tank from my dad soon. He raises some fishes and my uncle gave him a 150 gallon so I might get the 70 if I manage to convince him and use my words right.

Wait - What do you mean? Who are these people that keep dropping off turtles? These are not random strangers who somehow sense that you have turtles inside your house, and are dropping the baby turtles off on your doorstep.

These are people you know personally, not strangers - right? Why does this keep happening? Tell them to stop!

Do your folks know that these turtles are going to live 50 years? That the females will average 8" to 9" if not more in just a few short years. That females and males do not cohabitate well together.

You are going to need WAY more than just a 70 gallon tank. I'm the last guy that will say you need to strictly adhere to the 10 gallon per inch rule - I don't. I do consider other factors such as floor space, filtration, and the two turtles track record of living together.

I don't mean to be harsh - but you sound like your getting excited about turtle keeping and getting in over your head. If you get in over your head with hatchlings, two years from now when they are all getting to be sub-adults you are going to have big troubles.

How many turtles are you currently housing, and how are you currently keeping them? What are your plans for housing then down the road?

No sir, I think the wild the males and females have more room and more hiding places, so less dangerous agression. Also, they mate and reproduce.

yes they will reproduce it dosent mean you have to incubate the eggs
