General Care Discussion :: How wide is a full grown RES?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So I'm about to start working on my ATBA, but I'm not sure how wide I should make the ramp/opening for my guy/gal to climb up through? I'd imagine if the opening isn't wide enough I could open it up some later, but if the ramp is too narrow it may make it hard for him/her to get up there at full size.

So, anyone got approximate width measurements of their full grown turtles so I can get an estimate? Thanks!

Hmm... my male is about 5.5in long (not yet full grown) and his ramp is about 6" wide. He's about 5" wide, plus they walk with their legs out to the side a bit. So I figured, the 6" ramp would be ok. I don't really know how wide they get once they're full grown though, especially if you have a female RES. :\ 6" seems to be plenty wide though.

I think it is certainly dependent on if you've got a male/female.

Just measured mine. My 7" male's shell is about 4" wide. My 8.5" female is 6" wide (and she was none too happy about being measured!). The female's ramp is 9", and it seems to be just the right size. It'd be a tight fit for her to climb if it was any smaller. You want to make sure you leave at least an inch on either side for their legs.

My 9inch female measures 6.5inches wide. Her ramp has an 8.5inch width.
