General Care Discussion :: how much do I feed my turtle?

I have a turtle who is around 6 in. long. I was wondering how often are you suppose to feed them at that size? I pretty much just feed him rosey fishes from the pet store. Is that bad for him or her? thanks for your time.

A diet of only feeder fish isnt that great. Vegetables are definately recommeded, you can even go as far as throwing a piece of collard greens, or romaine lettuce into the tank and leaving it there... As for quantity, you should try and feed it an amount equal to the size of its head, Not including their neck.

ok. because I usually get 15 fish & put it in his tank. Well, plain lettuce work? I was also thinkin about puttin live plants in there from my job. Is there a certain type of plant to give them or just any? And their suppose to eat that amount everyday? Sorry, to ask questions. Im just tryin to be a better turtle parent.

It would be good to do some reading on the site about what foods are good to give in order to provide a more balanced diet...

Live plants from your job---what kind are they?

You can give some plant matter daily. On alternate days also feed other foods (pellets, for example). The portion size recommended above is good.

Iceberg lettuce doesn't really have any nutritional value for your turtle so...a little every once in a while isn't gonna hurt but it doesn't help either. I've been feeding lots of kale and my turtles love it.

We've gotten a few plants from the pet store and some they love and some they totally ignore. I'll look next time and see what their favorite is called...we just call it "turtle crack" cause they go nuts over it. lol
