General Care Discussion :: First question for a newb

I just got a hatchling today which my wife bought for me. I currently have him or her set up in a rubbermaid container with a basking rock. basking spot hits 85. Water is at 73 and also 10.0 repti. I have already seen him/her basking and swimming. I tried to feed some hatchling pellets I bought in the store. Should I be putting these pellets in the water or up in the basking area? With the snappers I used to have just put the pellets in the water. I look forward to learning much from this site.

put the pellets In the water for the food..turtles need water to eat they do not produce saliva

it may look like they eat out of the water but they may just be holding it untill they reach water

and for the pellets i feed my hatchling i need to soak tehm in a seperate glass first for 30 seconds to soften them up

or else my hatchling has a rough time breaking them apart..

i feed my hatchling 2 pellets a day

one in the morning and one at night

Yeah I used to have to let mine soak in water too but now they eat them with no prob.

Just sprinkle like 1 or 2 in the water for now and when the turtle sees the food it will usually go straight for it.

Well thats the thing when i first got my hatchling he didnt eat right away so it would soak up no prob

but now he knows im here to give him food so he would go after them no problem right away

so its his own fault! haha

Thanks for the fast replies. So just one or two of those little pellets. They are tiny, I mean like the top of a pin tiny.. So just two?

5.0 is what u need!!

10.0 is for desert animals

what kind of pellets are they

the pellets i feed my hatchling range from 3cm-1inch

if they are really small i would make it a little more often

there like the size of little tiny tiny balls lol i had them they domt work well cuz they cant see them get some reptomin and brake it in 2

Yes those would be them! I will go to the store tomorrow and pick some of the stuff up which you mention. Also, how do these turtle sleep at night?..lol..

I got him from the all animal expo in wheaton IL. I will try to get some pictures up as soon as I can.

o they sleep underwater and surface for air every 3 hours ..o and make sure you turn the lights off at night

Sounds good!..Good to know this. I have the lights on a 12hr timer already so they are off.

Good stuff 12hr timer is perfect

and they can sleep underwater..on the basking rock..usually in the water at night
