I am looking for a new filter to replace my two Tetra Whispers for my turtle tank. I was considering the Aquaclear 110. Does anybody use this filter and, if so, is it any good?

My turtle tank is a 120 gallon high (60''x18''x26'')

One AC 110 won't be near enough for a 120g tank.

You'd be much better off with a canister filter. I personally recommend the Fluval FX5. They're a really nice filter, and would work really well for your 120g. I've got one on each my 75g and 90g.

A Rena XP4 would also be a good filter.

If money is tight, you *might* be able to get away with for instance an XP3, but you might find it has trouble keeping up.

One place you really don't want to skimp on is filtration.

I just googled the FX5 you mentioned. Yikes! Pretty expensive and I can't really see spending that much on a filter.

My tank isn't filled up all the way, it only has about 16'' of water. Do I still have to have a filter rated for 120 gallons?

Go- 53 The filter you mentioned is not nearly large enough. When it comes to turtles you need to exchange the water at least 5 times per hour. Some manufactures use sizing for fish and not turtles. The FX5 would be a good choice. It puts out about 900 gph which would do great on a 120 gallon tank. When sizing for turtles you use gph and not some tank sizing used for fish. Good Luck

I use aquaclear filters

i have had problems with them randomly stoping and pausing for 15 seconds then starting back up again

some days it does it 50 times a day

other days i dont see it at all

u should add as much water as you can ..the filter your going to buy is 70 bucks ...and it prob does less then it says on the box i would go with an fx5 or a fluval 404

I guess it does make sense to go by GPH, since turtles are really messy.

But how exactly does the FX5 work? I have never had a canister filter before.

Just for reference, I used an Aquaclear 110 in a 40-gallon stock tank with one 4-inch turtle. It works well in a tank that size, but I wouldn't recommend as the sole filter in a 120-gallon tank.

Canisters work on gravity (ideally should be lower than the tank they're filtering), have ample room for biomedia, and don't need repriming if the power goes out. The FX5 or the XP4 would be fine in your tank. I have heard mixed reviews about Jebo filters, however (they are basically a copy of Eheims, which are also good, but pricey, filters).
