General Care Discussion :: Am I doing the right thing...

So I took in this RES about 18 months ago. Not sure if anyone remembers me ....Anyway hes doing really good and we're taking real good care of him. he's in a 40 gallon breeder and he loves to eat and swim and beg for food and generally all the stuff a pet turtle would do I guess.

The thing is Im probably not going to be able to go much bigger than this tank.( maybe 75 gall) He'll have a home in my house as long as he needs it, but should I consider looking at a better living environment for him. Can a turtle like this go to a pond...Is it safe after having lived his whole life in a tank ? I ask because I found a small turtle rescue ( private pond owner witth other res)

Thanks for all the good info in the past about taking care of Solo. Hes a real character and Ive turned many new RES owners onto this website.

Considering how overpopulated RES are, I think you are offering him the best possible situation. He can certainly do well in a protected and enclosed pond, but perhaps less fortunate RES can move there.

I do think that a lot of turtle rescues have high standards for new owners but I doubt many can promise to find your turtle a better home than the one you've provided.

I will just answer your other question. Yes the res can go into the pond even though its been inside a tank its whole life and even hibernate
