ok so recently i just saved a res from possibly dieing here is the story... i was on my way back from new braunfels and was passing by a pond when i noticed this guy with a tank so i drove up by the pond and started talking to this guy and he had just move into a duplex in new braunfels and didn't have room for his res so he was gonna dump it in the pond even though its been in captivity its whole life and he was just gonna leave the 30 gallon out by the street and hoped some1 would pick it up so i convinced him it would be better off with me and i could take really good care of it (since i have this site) so i got a free res and 30 gallon tank now i believe its a female because the nails are really long and her tail is really fat and not long and has a cloaca close to here shell not by the tip or her tail so i believe its a female its about 5-6 inches long right now shes in the 30 gallon she was in original but she is only going to be in there for about half of 2day since im finishing setting up my 80gallon pond that im going to put her in the only concern i have is that it might be pyramiding what do yall think here is a pic


and also im concerned about a part of her shell it looks a little cracked and where its cracked it has some blueish green type of color stuff on here is a pic and u can see the crack and the discoloration on the shell where the crack is the picture is with the screen on because i wanted her to be able to bask all she wanted since once i brought her home put her in the tank she pretty much basked until night time shes not shy one bit to


also 2 other things i was wondering because my other 2 baby res sleep in the water but i noticed this one was sleeping on the basking dock and was wondering if it was normal and also any good names y'all think i should name her i would appreciate it

yea i know shes going to be outside once this pond is done so she will have natural sun through out the summer and she does have cuttle bone to munch on ....also just wondering about her under side on my babys they have nice little pblack dots and on hers her under side looks all weird ill get a pic up so u can see what i mean

that colouration/ cracking looks to me like nothing more than a few layers of shell have came off.

one of my turts had a similar looking spot which has now gone. not sure how he did it but we assume he had been climbing or rubbing too hard trying to shed. as squirt said keep an eye on it.

just incase you need a little more info

daily salt baths, iodine and clotrimazole cream are the best things to use for fungal infections aswell as minimize the risk and effects of shell rot.

clotrimazole you can buy at the local pharmacy and one of the most recognized brands is canesten.

i went through months of salt baths and iodine application to help my turtles shell. twice a day....salt bath and toothbrush scrub. dry. scrape. apply iodine. wait to dry. apply clotrimazole. wait to dry. keep dry docked for a few hours. allow to swim untill next application.

man that was a long haul of a ttreatment process i can tell you. glad its all over.

wat do u mean entire shell like a top view to or what??? and know im waiting for her to get on the dock cause right now i have alot of kids running around and all i need is for one of them to hit me while im carrying her so if she doesnt get on the dock ill get a pic l8r when the kids leave

theyre is some schute retention evident on her shell but it is by no means pyramiding. schute retention can be reversed more often than not. once proper care and basking routines take hold.

it will take a while but it really isnt anything to worry about.

all you need to look for right now is fungal infection on te shell.

take her out of the tank and allow her to dry off completely. once she is dry, study the shell closely and check for white residue. check for loose schutes by sticking your finger nail inder the corner of each schute and checking if it lifts free or not. if the schute is ready to come off it will just pop off.

never try to force or peel off a schute as it can damage the shell.

its hard sometimes to detect fungal infection if the schutes are loose as they will appear white.

if there is white residue take an old toothe brush and give it a rub. you will this way be able to determine how bad the infection is. (if there is any).

if its only a small amount then it can be easily sorted. if its 1mm+ deep, then your in it for the long haul.

hopefully though everything will check out.

as for the chip in the shell, clean it every few days with your old toothbrush and some salt water, just to keep any bacteria at bay incase theres somewhere it can get trapped.

how exactly do i clearn her do i put her in like a little container with salt water and try brushing her?

yeah, or fill the sink. i used to fill the sink with 1-2" of water and add salt. just be sure to have the water warm enough to disolve the salt.

before you do that though. once she it dry just dry brush her shell first to see how things are. sometimes the white patches brush right off. if not then use the salt baths.

oh and be sure to clean the sink properly afterwards.

a large plastic tub is an even better idea. the type you wash your dishes in. that way you can sit on the sofa and do the brushing. plus you can just rince the tub and store it for next time.
