Hi all, my res has gone underwater and almost looks as if hes choking, his throat puffs up and he opens his mouth as if hes choking..he does it over and over then i disappear for a while and hes basking.

Hes perfectly normal when basking, havent noticed anything wrong...Just noticed this today that he was doing that underwater..

What do you think it is? I put the water temp to 86F..just to keep him warm..I also forgot to mention hes about 2.5inches and roughly a year and a bit..

The throat puffing sounds like he's taking in air/holding his breath. But I'm not sure about the gaping mouth. Have you noticed any other signs of RI?

I havent noticed any other signs of RI, the only thing that was out of the blue was the throat puffing up underwater, staying still and sort of jolting, as if it was choking..he did this at around 4 second intervals, his mouth stayed open for about a second each time.

I have never seen him do it so i got worried..what else could it be?

Also the water is now 86F, thats not too hot is it? They seem to be a bit more active as well.

Was it a yawn?

Could you see into his mouth to see if there was some obstruction?

if it only happened once, it could've been a yawn like melvira said.

It happened once, it was happening in the water, he then went to bask, as soon as he went into water again he did it again, it was different to a yawn but im not sure what it is..He hasnt done it again..looked like choking but there isnt anything for him to choke on..

I guess ill just watch and see if anything else comes of it?
