Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi,

Big Karl (my RES) is a bit lonely in the tank i think. I was thinking about getting him some friends, but I am not sure what to get. I am guessing another turtle would be ok, but are there any fish that are compatible with the turtles? What are my options?

Getting a second turtle if you don't already have a huge tank is risky (well it0s risky either way especially if there is significant size difference). Try a few feeder fish first and see what happens. No reason to waste money on fancy fish if they're gonna get eaten in a matter of hours.

My turtle eats all his "friends" too. He ate 2 plecos when he was still small! I don't think turtles get "lonely", maybe bored...So I try and find "toys" to keep him occupied, I have a bubble clam in Pickle's tank and he actually does play with it...he rides the bubbles to the surface and I have a picture somewhere of him trying to jam himself INTO the clam when it opens, it's funny to watch. I get him minnows to chase, but I don't get too attached LOL. In my opinion that's more enrichment for a turtle than making them share their territory w/ another turtle.

My turtles are kept with an oscar. They sometimes chase the oscar and if the oscar's had it, he pushes them away. I would say some powerful cichlids such as the Green Terror. Make sure they're around the same size as your turtles though.

My turtle doesn't like friends he ends up killing or eating them all. The longest living thing that has been in his tank was a snail but I found him dead one day so I think Ranger go to him.

why not get another turtle?
worse case scenario, he'll eat it.
do you want to deprive your turtle of social life?

A turtle does not have a "social life" as we know it... Turtles don't need buddies.

MY turtles spend alot of their time looking at each other in the eyeball, and lovingly looking up and down keeping eye contact,

(as I wrote in my question labeled: dont click HERE, actually complicating question., by the way, it would be greatly appreciated if someone can answer my questions!.)

afterwhich (grammar?) hunter starts fluttering (vibrating) his paws to her head, at that point when sleepy swims away.

anyway I humbly diagree with you marisa, we DO know it.

another FRIEND, you might want to consider , to make your turtle less bored, is the chinese algae eater, which is a very fast fish which will eat the algae in your tank.

Getting another turtle is not easy as it seems. You will need a much bigger tank, bigger filters, and another tank if they ever get aggressive.
Also turtles do fine by themeless they don't need anyone else to make their life happy.

It MIGHT be, depends if you believe in the 10 gallon an inch garbage (no offense, to anyone). How big is your tank? if its over sixty gallons, you dont need to change ANYTHING (again personal opinion, prove to me why not). And if it gets agressive, bring it back to the store (why wouldnt they accept a free turtle)...., and you just lost 30 bucks, its probably worth the gamble.

I don't think a 60 gallon would hold a full grown RES comfortably let alone 2 of them.

i agree, have you ever looked at pictures of a FULL grown RES? theyre HUGE... litterly the size of a dinner plate. and thats just the shell. i thought the tank size was a little outragious when i seen that. i have two 6ish month turtles in a 120g tank and im not too sure anymore if they will be too happy in that when they are full grown. because they love it now and they are only like 3inches give or take.
