General Care Discussion :: Good air plants?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I've been setting up my 110G tank for some time. Finally I sold the 75G tank, so my turtle needs to come out this week. But what I've been thinking, why not add some real air plants (like plants the are planted outside the tank, above the water line). Maybe it would be better for her, and maybe she will eat a leaf or two? Eventually I'll build a better basking area (will build a whole canopy), but right now, I'll jsut have to wait till the money comes in.

I wasnt sure which plants were ok to eat and/or fall into the water (which will be filtered, ate by the fishes/snails/shrimp, or taken out). I've actually searched for awhile, just not enough information. I've searched, but only fown water plants. I do not want to add anykind of fake plants into my tank, all live.
Thanks,
Richard

Exactly what do you mean by air plants?

..
I mean plants that are outside the tank, rather than growing inside the tank. I've seen plenty of setups where people took random plants (both fake and real) and put them around the tank, making it a better environment for the turtle, instead of it being comletely open, it would be kinda open, but more real life habitat for her. I also plan to go on with a sand box (for nesting), but thats another story and I am not worried about that yet.
Thanks,
Richard

He's asking what non-water plants are safe to be around turtles in case it eats them. I'd like to know the same thing. What if any potted plants are safe to be on the the basking platform?

Yea, it would be great for the basking area, more into the habitat that wild turtles basicly bask in. I remember seeing a post on another forum, I'll try to find it and ask him/her what real plants is in the tank. I'll try to get back later.
Thanks,
Richard

Most pet stores wouldn't have a clue unless it a trusted reptile specialty place.

I have spider plants taking over the house. They reproduce at an unbelievable rate. Does anyone have any thoughts about using them outside the water and if they would be safe if they were eaten by RES?

Well, still cant find any that are not too expensive and that are not toxic in some way (like if my turtle eats a leaf, she wont get sick, or if a leaf falls into the water and fish eat it, they wont get sick either). I plan to add some red Mangroves to my hang-on filter, jsut to give it a more natural filtration.
Thanks,
Richard
