General Care Discussion :: Can an RES sleep underwater?

Pretty much every day when I go to sleep, Brixie will go to her favorite spot in the tank at the bottom and close her eyes and lay there, and sleep, as far as I know. In the morning, she will be darting around the tank like her normal happy self. Does she sleep underwater, or go up gradually and maybe dock herself, then slip into the water before I wake up?

Yes they can - the prefer shallower waters so they can stick their heads up, or resting above the surface, but they do sleep below the surface.

yeah they will sleep at the bottom all out of there shell all crazy looking like they are trying to hold onto the glass lol. if you have bricks or something they usually just hold onto that or sit by the filter and sleep

Ah ok thanks. Just scared me, I didn't know they could hold their breath all night.

They don't - they will wake up swim up play abit then go back to bed

Sheldon sleeps in the same spot on the bottom of his tank, under his favorite plant every night. Sometimes he dreams of basking I think though, because occasionally he will do his superman pose while he's snoozing!

I am going to make a new "perch" area just under the water surface with this nifty plastic suction cup corner shelf thing I found on Amazon though tonight!

I believe I read somewhere that they can hold their breath for 15 minutes under water, but when they are asleep they can hold their breath for hours!

I found it funny that the moment I would turn off their light, all four of my RES will automatically go to sleep. The ones that would stay floating, would slowly sink to the bottom lol looking like a flying saucer that where landing.
These days, Ebony sleeps between her two heaters.

My female RES also pretty much stops right in her tracks. My male RES still knows I'm awake so he doesn't sleep right away

I think RES have bad eye sight at night because in the day they get scared as hell of me when i get near the tank but at night i can basiclly put my finger RIGHT in front of there face and they cant see crap..they just float there...lol
