I own two red eared slider of about 3-4 months old. they are about 3 inches. if the smaller one tried to makte with the bigger one, does it absolutely tell that they are male and female? or can they make mistakes?

Anatomically it can only work with a male and female.

I asked the guy at the pet store what the chances are of them actually re-producing, he said slim to none. Is this true? if so why?

A mature male and female will have a good chance of reproducing if the eggs are properly incubated.

Mature = being old enough to fertalize and lay eggs. Incubate means keeping the eggs safe in a nesting area, the female will do this herself with the proper nesting area. I wouldn't try to make babies unless you have the resources to house a bunch of baby RES's. I know It's cool and all to make babies, but it just isn't the responsible thing to do...

Also just to help make things clearer for you. Even if they are male and female. A female Res doesnt start usually producing eggs till her shell length is above 5inches.(This would be the mature part) So at 3 inches you will not see eggs.

what I actually want to know its, i still dont know if my two turtles are males or females, if I saw one attemps to mate, does it means they are opposite sex?

Well males have way longer nails, and theres something on the tail u can look at to tell, but they have to be old enough.
