General Care Discussion :: I was terrified.

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I went to the mall last week because my brother wanted to get some stuff from Gamestop. While he was in there, I went to Perfect Pets. I went back to the turtle tank to check them out. First off, they usually have five or six RES's in a 25 gallon tank. Messed up. This day, there was some bird food in front of the tank. I moved it aside and saw something beautiful. A large RES, probably a female, that was about seven inches long. It was huge! Then I saw something that brought tears to my eyes. A dead turtle. Floating in the water.

They were so lazy that they put bird food in front of it instead of taking the dead poor thing out. Some people are disgusting.

Sorry to hear it. It's rare to see a regular pet shop really take care of their turtles.

Left a pet store the other day, full grown RES in maybe a 10 gallon tank filled half way with a floating rock. No light, no water heater.. Sad. I own two turtles and this is my first time, but I did as much research as I could, spent the money for the room and items they would need. I am still learning here, but pet stores have no excuse at all for pure negligence.

His excuse was they expected to sell them quickly.

Pet stores hardly take care of any of their pets.. let alone exotics like turtles. It's sad :/

You should try to write the management if you can. I did that when I went into a local Petland and saw so many lizards in one tank that they were layers on top of each other and they were frantically trying to get out so they were scratching each other up..not to mention all the other typical bad pet shop stuff (dead fish, dirty cages,ect)..also they sold puppies that come from a puppy mill. The corporate office came to investigate a few times (because I wrote them 5 times haha) and I think they fired the manager. Last I checked, things were much better (although I still wont go there now that they confessed to selling puppy mill dogs..I only went before because they were the only people selling ferrets near by). Another Petland got closed a few years back in our mall for animal abuse. I don't understand why people work in pet stores if they don't care about animals. I was a dog groomer at Petsmart for 4 years and I am happy to say they take great care of their animals and the managers are required to own at least one pet to even get the job! (I will say..they do not treat their employees so well..thats why I don't work there any more lol).

I used to write Petco about their Guinea pigs... Since the way they keep them is atrocious.
Nothing ever got done about it though so i just shop in the small local shops now,
One is really great and keeps there pigs in huge set ups.
And if they don't have something i need,
They normally can order it for me 1/2 the price of the big stores.
(Petco sells the UVB bulbs for $45 here, my local shop sales it for $25)

My favorite local shop is a little expensive but they do a great job so I don't mind paying a little extra. Plus, they aren't rich..they put the money back into the store..unlike corporate pet stores ..
