I already have my 16yo female RES, 20cm long.
My friend is telling me that his friends have an unwanted turtle.
It is also RES female and virtually the same size [22cm].

Is it a good idea to adopt her and put her in the same tank? Do females fight?
I'm not asking about the technical aspects (size of the tank, etc), I'm asking from the point of view of the turtles.
Are the turtles going to be happy together, or is there any chance (risk) of problems?

I have had my two since they were the size of half dollars..and one of them did bite the others tail off. Luckily for me, one of my turtles is very submissive so they don't fight anymore but I don't think this is typical

There's a difference between two baby turtles that grow up together- they would probably be ok but still could decide to turn on each other at any time- and plopping one grown up turtle in another turtles already established territory. Not a good idea, though your heart is in the right place.

Females are less likely to fight, but there are such things as aggressive females. You'll also need a tank upgrade, so it might just be better to help rehome her.

I have an agressice female. During the summer when I put them in together, I put them in a stock tank for about an hour them put both of the in the pond. Doesn't always work though.

My friend used vivid language to describe the turtle as very kind but unhappy.
But I don't want any tails bitten off...

You can put them in a seperate container together and see what happens.

I agree, you can always try but you have to be prepared to have a larger tank and to separate them if they don't get along.

my turtles fight sometimes, mainly the 2 RES, ive had to physically part them twice as one had the other ones loose fles in its mouth.

my 4 turts have nave never been seperated into different tanks, they have eventually established a pecking order and although they do have the ocasional scrap, i dont really see what all the fiss is about when it comes to them fighting.

after all do they not fight in the wild?? what about when they were still in the pet stores with their 47 siblings crammed in together...

this is just my opinion but i wouldnt worry too much about them fighting as long as they have plenty of space.

When they are larger its very dangerous. For an example, had my turtle been a male, she would have died from getting her tail bitten off since thats where he would use the bathroom. I am lucky she is not a boy..

Even as a girl, it was a very close call. Not to mention claws scratching eyes and what not. They have an extremely strong bite.. they could tear each other up. They are not in the wild, they are contained in a small area... not a river.

Is that turtle waxed?
Its shell looks so smooth and shiny. Mine is dull.

How they are in the wild or how they are kept in stores is not relevant, they are in completely different habitats.
